The Challenge

Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust needed a leadership development programme that would work for leaders and managers at different stages of their journey not a one-size-fits-all approach, but something that could genuinely meet people where they were and help them grow from there.

The programme also needed to evolve. As the NHS developed its new Management and Leadership Framework and Code of Practice, Learn to Lead needed to reflect those national standards while remaining genuinely relevant and practical for the people going through it.

What WonderIf Delivered

Susie Edwards has designed and delivered Career and Leadership Development Programmes for Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust for three consecutive years a virtual and in-house programme running at two concurrent levels:

Realising Your Potential — for leaders who are developing their confidence, building their skills and finding their leadership voice

Building on Your Success — for more experienced leaders who want to deepen their practice, extend their influence and take on greater complexity

The two levels run concurrently meaning the organisation builds leadership capability across different stages simultaneously, with participants learning alongside peers at a similar point in their journey.

The programme is now being re-imagined to incorporate the new NHS Management and Leadership Framework creating consistent professional standards and a Code of Practice for all NHS managers and leaders. Learn to Lead is being mapped onto the Capabilities and Management and Leadership Code, ensuring it meets national standards while remaining locally relevant and practically grounded.

The Impact

Three consecutive years of delivery is itself a measure of impact. The Trust's commitment to continuing and evolving the programme reflects its value to leaders and to the organisation.

The redesign to incorporate the NHS Management and Leadership Framework positions Learn to Lead as a programme that not only develops leaders but demonstrates alignment with national professional standards important for both individual participants and organisational governance.
