A Year of Leadership and Career Development
The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust
Client: The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust
Programme: Year-long leadership and career development programme
Format: Webinars, workshops, away days and in-person events
Audience: Medical residents, GP specialty trainees, consultants, educational supervisors and SAS doctors
Duration: 2024–2025, 18 sessions
My role: Programme design and facilitation
The Context
Clinicians and clinical educators carry heavy workloads in a busy acute trust. The skills that make the biggest difference to how teams work — handling conflict, giving honest feedback, influencing without authority — are rarely taught directly, and there is little time to step away and think about your own career.
The Trust wanted a sustained programme rather than a one-off training day, so that people could come back to the topics, practise them and build on them over the year.
The Approach
I built a year-long programme that mixed short, accessible webinars with deeper in-person sessions, so people could join in a way that fitted around clinical work.
Webinars — a regular, low-barrier way for busy clinicians to engage with each topic.
Workshops — deeper practice and discussion using real situations from participants’ own work.
Away days and in-person events — time away from the ward to reflect, connect and plan.
The programme covered five themes: human factors; managing conflict; giving and receiving feedback; negotiating and influencing; and career agility — supporting others’ development, and your own.
The Impact
A full year of development — 18 webinars, workshops and events across five themes over 2024–2025.
Reach across career stages — from medical residents and GP specialty trainees to consultants, SAS doctors and educational supervisors.
Why It Worked
A programme, not a one-off — running across a year meant people could return to topics and put them into practice between sessions.
Formats that fit clinical work — mixing webinars with in-person days made it possible for busy clinicians to take part.
Practical topics that matter every day — conflict, feedback and influence come up on every shift, and career agility helps people stay and grow.
